I always try to continually challenge myself to run faster and/or farther by listing my goals on my calendar and on my blog as well each month.  Than, I work towards those goals on a daily/weekly basis!

This approach has worked best for me (outside of race season), however I know that many other runners follow specific training schedules in order to reach their goals of increasing their distance, speed or preparing for an up coming race.
